Laser Toenail Fungus Treatment

Servicing Hollywood, CA and surroundings.

There is a better way for toenail fungus treatment (onychomycosis) that does not entail surgery or using harsh medicines that work in only about half of the patients. We are now pleased  to offer the new GenesisPlus™ laser procedure that is FDA cleared for many indications of the toes and feet. GenesisPlus™ is a quick and comfortable way to clear the nail without drug therapy or surgery. Clear nail growth can be observed following one 20-40 minute laser treatment. Stubborn, long standing toenail fungal infections may require one or two additional sessions (spaced three months apart). In addition, the GenesisPlus™ is effectively used in scar revision/ correction and the treatment of warts.

Toenail fungus often occurs in adults and can be contracted in many different ways including pedicures, nail injuries, or even wearing closed-in footwear. Once contracted, usually you will notice brittleness, discoloration, and thickening of the nail including change of shape. If left untreated it can permanently damage the nail and spread to surrounding nails and skin.

Over-the-counter creams and ointments generally do not help in the fight of toenail fungus. Topical medicines for toenail fungus need about 12-13 months to treat this condition and are only successful in about 50% of the patients. Oral medications can have serious side effects that require periodic blood tests and constant medical supervision. Even if your healthcare provider removes the nail it may take over one year for the toenail to grow back.

Dr Lazo is committed to offering patients the latest technologies and advances for their concerns. Our expert staff is here to help you understand these advanced treatment options and ensure the results you expect are achieved without compromise.

More about Nail Fungus…

Onychomycosis also known commonly as Nail Fungus, affects about 10% of the population. It can cause nails to become yellow or discolored. As the infection progresses, the nails become dark, thick and brittle. Nails can become painful or ingrown. An infection is caused by contact with the fungus, which is everywhere in the environment, especially swimming pools, public showers, gyms and nail spas. Trauma to the nails, age and poor health can also increase the chances of infection Diabetics are more susceptible to the infection.

What are treatment options for Fungus?

Oral drugs can be effective in treating the fungus. The medication can take anywhere from 12 weeks to longer for clearing of the nail. Side effects are a concern with oral treatment, especially liver damage and heart failure. Blood tests are necessary weekly or monthly to monitor for side effects. Topical drugs are less effective in treating nail fungus and restoring clear nails. Usually, the drug must be applied twice a day until the nails are clear, which can be 12-24 months. There are no significant side effects, however in some patients, the medication cannot penetrate the nail to reach the infection. Laser treatments are effective in treating the infection and restoring clear nails. Most patients experience at least some improvement. A clinical study shows no adverse effects.

HOW DOES THE CUTERA LASER FOR TOENAIL FUNGAL REMOVAL WORK?

The Cutera GenesisPlus™ Laser, which is FDA approved for the treatment of nail fungus, works by passing a laser light which gently heats up the skin underneath the infected nail bed. Once the target temperature is reached the laser has killed the fungus. Since the nails grow very slowly results are usually seen in 6-12 months. Following the treatment, post-care instructions will be reviewed.

Does the Cutera fungus laser hurt?

The Cutera laser provides a comfortable safe feedback. Patient feedback is also important during the procedure. A warming sensation will be felt in the nail bed as the laser is passed over the nail. If the nail feels “hot”, the patient can take a break. Immediately following the procedure, the nail may feel warm for a few minutes and most patients can resume normal activity.

How many and how long are the fungal nail laser treatments?

Most patients show improvement after one treatment. The required number of treatments will vary depending on how severely the toenail is infected. In severe cases in which the toenail has been infected for more than one year, one or two additional treatments 2-3 months apart. Each treatment session can vary from 20-40 minutes.

How much does it cost?

Treatment costs are based on the number of toenails involved per treatment. First foot, great toenail is $500. The lesser toes are $100 each. That totals to $900 for one foot. The second foot great toenail is $250. The lesser toes are $50 each. That totals $450.00 for the second foot. The total is $1350 for both feet.

Most infections only require one treatment. Nail fungus that has persisted for longer than one year may require 2 or 3 treatments, spaced 3 months apart. These additional sessions are given at a 25% discount.

Occasional discounts are also available through the Internet GroupOn.com,
LivingSocial.com and Craigslist.com promotions.

Are the laser treatments covered by insurance?

Most cosmetic laser treatments are not covered by insurances. We accept cash, checks, American Express, Visa and MasterCard.

How soon will I see improvements after Cutera?

In humans, nails grow at an average rate of 3 mm (0.12 in) a month (as they are a form of hair). Fingernails require 3 to 6 months to re-grow completely, and toenails require 12 to 18 months.  Actual growth rate is dependent upon age, gender, season, exercise level, diet, and hereditary factors. As the new nail grows, the healthy nail will be seen at the base.
